The Supreme Court yesterday granted leave to proceed with the fundamental rights petition filed by Kompannaveediya residents who complained they were being evicted so that the land could be given free-of-charge to the TATA Housing Development Company. The Bench comprising Justices Shiranee Thilakawardhane, K. Sripavan and S.E. Wanasundara granted leave for the alleged infringement of the petitioners’ fundamental rights to equality and equal protection of the law as well as the freedom to engage in any lawful occupation or business.
